Play Spades against the computer

Classic Deck Games is built for solo play in the browser: you always play Spades against the computer, with a bot partner at your side. No accounts, no app install, and no waiting for other humans online.

  • You + computer partner vs two computer opponents (4 players, 2 teams).
  • Partnership bidding, trump spades, Nil bids, and sandbags — same core rules as live Spades.
  • Free in your browser on phone, tablet, or desktop — no download required.
  • Computer opponents follow the same house rules listed on this site (including the −200 loss line).

How to play

Four-player partnership trick-taking game. Spades are always trump. Teams bid how many tricks they will win, then play 13 tricks per hand. You sit across from your partner. Your team’s bid is the sum of both partners’ bids. Tricks won by either partner count toward the team total. 4 players deal 13 cards each hand. Players bid how many tricks they expect to win; your team contract is the sum of both partners' bids.

  1. Deal: 13 cards to each player from a standard 52-card deck.
  2. Bid: Each player bids 0–13 tricks clockwise. Your team contract is the sum of both partners' bids.
  3. Play: Win tricks by following suit when you can. Spades trump all other suits.
  4. Score: Tally the hand and add points to your running team totals.
  5. Win: First team to 500 points wins the match.

House rules on this site

  • 4 players, fixed partnerships (you + partner vs two opponents)
  • Spades are always trump
  • Nil bids allowed (bid 0 tricks)
  • Sandbags enabled — +1 point per overtrick; every 10 sandbags costs 100 points
  • First team to 500 points wins the match
  • A team at -200 points or below loses immediately

Spades beat all other suits. If no spade is played, the highest card of the led suit wins. You may not lead a spade until spades have been broken — a spade was played on a trick led in another suit. If you only have spades, you may lead them. For full scoring, Nil bids, and sandbags, see our Spades rules and scoring guide.

How do you win at Spades?
First team to reach 500 points wins the match.
Who is my partner in this game?
You sit across from a computer partner. Your team bids and scores together against two computer opponents.
How does bidding work?
Each player bids 0–13 tricks. Your team contract is the sum of your bid and your partner's bid.
What is Nil in Spades?
Nil is a bid of 0 tricks. If you take none, your team gains 100 points; if you take any trick, your team loses 100 points.
Can you lead spades?
Not until spades are broken — when a spade is played on a trick led in another suit. If you only have spades, you may lead them.
What are sandbags?
Each trick over your team bid is a sandbag (+1 point). Every 10 sandbags costs your team 100 points.
What happens at -200 points?
If either team’s score reaches -200 points or below, that team loses the match immediately. This sudden-loss line is a house rule used on Classic Deck Games — many home games only play to 500 without a −200 cut-off.

Is this 2-player Spades?
No. Classic Deck Games uses standard four-player partnership Spades only — you plus a computer partner vs two computer bots. Some other sites offer 2-player Spades; this table does not.
Is blind Nil supported?
No. Blind Nil (bidding zero without looking at your cards) is not available on Classic Deck Games. Standard Nil — bidding 0 after you see your hand — is supported.
